Mind blown! If you had to guess how many iPhone 4s would Apple manage to push in three days, you wouldn’t guess 1.7 million would you? And you’d be wrong, because that’s exactly how many they sold.
We wrote about iPhone 4 shortages, but when we’re talking about 1.7 million units sold in just three days, it’s perhaps more appropriate to call it “overwhelming, I can’t believe it’s true demand” rather than “shortage”.
By the way, starting tomorrow, AT&T stores should be able to offer walk-in sales - they couldn’t do that so far, because of said overwhelming demand.
Even Apple is impressed, quoth Steve Jobs - “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history”. No, really? The iPhone 3G and the 3GS sold “just” 1 million in three days, so yes, we’d say the iPhone 4 sales are doing pretty good.
Mr. Jobs also apologizes “to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply”. No mention of all those customers crying foul over the poor reception. They were told to stay tuned even though there was no problem (aside from users holding it wrong that is). Makes sense, right?
Ah, well. We guess the problems reported by the first people to get an iPhone 4 didn’t scare the crowd away. Plus, there are already rumors of a 4.01 update to iOS that will solve the reception issues in software.

Yet another fashion brand joined the luxury mobile phones bandwagon today. Versace announced their Unique touch-driven phone, which was developed in cooperation with ModeLabs Group and LG.
The face of the hand-crafted (did you really expect something else?) Versace Unique is constructed from ceramic or handmade lacquers, while the frame options include 18K yellow gold finish or 316L grade stainless steel inlay.

The leather back is embossed with the all too familiar Medusa head logo. The Versace Unique sapphire crystal screen is the largest single piece of this high-tech material ever produced for consumers. Scratch-resistant and all, it should provide the ultimate protection for the Unique 3-inch touchscreen of yet unknown resolution.
The other features of the Versace Unique, which geeks might find interesting are its 5 megapixel camera and 3G support. The (probably ridiculously overpriced) handset will start shipping next month.

A teaser site is up for the PUMA PHONE - yes, the company better known for its sports equipment is going to join the mobile phone race next week. It has a solar panel and its features are geared towards a sporty crowd.
The teaser site doesn’t have much to say, but looking through the source code of the page, we found some additional info that is not visible otherwise. Here’s what we know - it will have a solar panel on the back (a “Solarmeter”), a GPS receiver as well as Bike Tracker and Run Tracker, which would help you monitor your exercises, as well as a step counter.
The PUMA PHONE also sports (if you’ll pardon the pun) Video Chat (so, it probably also has 3G), something called “PUMA Icon Messaging (Puma Language)” - presumably a chat client, maybe one that roars all the time, and finally, a Music Turntable (perhaps something like the Samsung M7600 Beat DJ has).
It’s connectivity is said to be good enough to “embrace the PUMA Community on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube”, whatever that means.
The PUMA PHONE is apparently being developed by Sagem, who also developed several Porsche-branded phones, but we’ll know more in five days at the MWC.

A new intriguing mobile form factor concept comes from the Brazilian designer Fabio Dabori. The so-called HOOK promises to innovate the keypad locking mechanism and push the future mobile designs to a new direction of smaller, more compact handsets.
The HOOK concept is actually quite simple - a standard bar phone receives a hook (metal or plastic) embedded around its keys. The hook can be either flippable or sliding as shown on the design mock-ups below.

This hook can help and innovate the current technologies in two ways. The first one concerns the keypad lock/unlock mechanism. Instead of pushing at least two buttons for the lock or unlock sequence you will be able to do that with only one flip or slide of the hook.
Next and most important is that manufacturers can put the microphone at the bottom of the hook. This can lead the mobile designs into more compact sizes and even some artistic shapes, because the microphone will still be near the mouth thanks to the flipping/sliding hook.

Of course the HOOK brings one big concern - something protruding out of the handset (especially that thin) is usually easily breakable. So if some day this concept gets a green light, the hook should either be quite solid or it might turn out quite a bummer.
You are welcome to share your thoughts about the HOOK design in the comments.
