Nokia N8 starts shipping Sep 30, E7 to be announced next week?

The long wait isn’t over yet - new info says the Nokia N8 will start shipping in late September, at least for those who pre-ordered. In the mean time, the Nokia E7 popped up, reportedly going official as soon as next week.

The Nokia N8 has been on a handful of sites for pre-order, each site citing a different launch date. Some of those dates flew through with no N8 in sight, other dates are always a couple of weeks ahead.

The end just might be in sight though - a Finnish site spoke to Nokia’s Senior Communications Manager who said that Nokia N8 pre-orders will shipping September 30. He also said that the N8 will cost 499 euros - since we’ve seen different prices for different countries, that shipping date might be for Finland only.

Still, the Nokia World event is fast approaching (it’s on September 14 and 15) - there Nokia is expected to unveil the Nokia E7. The E7 is a Symbian^3 phone with a slide out QWERTY and got leaked a few times, with speculation that it’s the Nokia N9.

Well, it’s not the N9, but the specs still seem quite impressive - a 4″ touchscreen (probably nHD), 3G, Wi-Fi, 8MP camera with dual LED flash and an HDMI port. If these specs pan out, the Nokia E7 should sit somewhere between the Nokia C7 (which has a smaller screen and no QWERTY) and the Nokia N9 (which touts an aluminum body and MeeGo). The Nokia E7 specs are unconfirmed, but that should change next week.

Nokia C7 previewed before official announcement, will cost 350 euro

Nokia are obviously not doing a great job preventing those leaks as another of their handsets has been previewed well-ahead of its official announcement. This time it’s the Nokia C7 and even though the preview doesn’t give us all the details it gets clear that the C7 is a slightly trimmed-down Nokia N8, coming at a lower price.

Nokia C7 gets previewed

Despite his history of legal issues with Nokia, Eldar Murtazin from mobile-review.com posted a preview of the Nokia C7. The handset obviously takes the N8 base, but uses a cheaper body (plastic rather than anodized aluminum) and cuts down a few features . The major cut is the camera - 8MP and LED flash vs. the 12MP camera with xenon flash on the N8.

HDMI is also gone and the internal memory has been halved to 8GB. The rest of it is the same - 3.5″ nHD AMOLED, 680MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 1200mAh Li-Ion battery and of course Symbian^3. The Nokia C7 also supports the latest local wireless connectivity - Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0 (which hit 10Mbit/s during testing).

The camera has been downsized to 8MP

Eldar Murtazin estimates that the Nokia C7 will be available in mid-October or November for 350 euro (based on the announced 370 euro price of the N8 with actual prices of around 450 euro for pre-order).

Nokia N8 goes on pre-order, arrives by the end of September

The first Symbian^3-powered device, Nokia N8, was first said to start selling in August but it seems that the phone has actually been pushed back a month. But the good news is if you happen to live in Italy and want to be among the first owners of the smartphone, you can pre-order it right away.

To refresh your memory, Nokia N8 isn’t only the first Symbian^3-running smartphone but also the only (so far) Nokia device to come with a (pretty good) 12-megapixel snapper on board. On top of that it also features an anodized aluminum casing, a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen as well as a 680MHz processor, HDMI port and a video player with DivX/XviD support.

Nokia N8 pre-order

The N8 was said to start shipping on 24 August but, apparently, the device needs some extra touches and will arrive by the end of September 2010. If you want to pre-order it, just follow that link. It only takes a few clicks and 469 euro.

The price is a bit higher than the 370 euro Nokia talked about at the announcement event (it adds up to 444 euro when VAT is included). We do believe that this will be fixed a few weeks after the phone actually hits the shelves though.

MeeGo available for Nokia N900 after all, probably no official ROM

Well, well - Nokia N900 got MeeGo after all. We’ll probably never see it as an official firmware, but as of today MeeGo 1.0 is available for download and it runs on N900 as well as Atom-based netbooks. The next update, v1.1, is already scheduled - in other words, MeeGo has landed.

So Nokia won’t release MeeGo on the Nokia N900 commercially. That’s sort of OK though, because there’s a pretty strong community around the Nxxx devices and they’ve ran weirder things on their beloved Internet tablet/phone devices like KDE (a desktop Linux shell).

The handset release of the MeeGo 1.0 platform is still more developer-oriented - developing the user experience will start in June. New releases are planned to come out every six months - so, you can expect MeeGo 1.1 in October.

MeeGo is also available for netbooks - non-touch for now, but v1.1 will bring touch support to the netbook version. There’s some pretty positive feedback in the MeeGo blog as far as the netbook version is concerned - will Chrome OS arrive late to the netbook/tablet OS party?

Anyway, here’s the download link for the Nokia N900 MeeGo OS. If you give it a go, leave us a comment with your impressions.
