Motorola Droid Shadow found in gym, some specs confirmed

Author: admin  //  Category: Motorola, News

You can add gyms as a good place to find unannounced phones - that’s where a Motorola Droid Shadow was found. The Android smartphone is the future successor of the Motorola Droid and possibly even the Google Nexus Two.

So far the Motorola Droid Shadow has appeared with Verizon branding and it will probably be an exclusive at launch. We of course expect to see a Motorola Milestone Shadow or something along those lines to appear at later stages.

The phone reportedly features a 4.3″ WVGA screen and an 8MP camera with 720p video recording. There should also be goodies like mini-HDMI port and 16GB (or 8GB depending on who you believe) internal memory.

The Motorola Droid Shadow supposedly has 512MB RAM and was first said to run on an OMAP 3630 CPU clocked at 720MHz. The Shadow uses Motorola’s MOTOBLUR UI, but we don’t know what that means for a Froyo update.

Anyway, rumor has it that the Motorola Droid Shadow was found in a corporate Verizon gym in Washington. The device was soon remotely locked but the guy that found it, managed to confirm the screen specs, the 16GB internal storage and the camera. He also said that the CPU was a Snapdragon.

What was left unconfirmed however was whether or not the Motorola Droid Shadow has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Previous rumors said there will be two devices - a Motorola Droid 2 with QWERTY and Motorola Shadow without.

The Droid Shadow is expected to be released in June or July, so we should know more about it by then.

Motorola Backflip photos show off its weird form factor

Author: admin  //  Category: Motorola, News

The Motorola Backflip (it’s also known as Enzo) is a first for AT&T - it’s an Android phone. It’s not official yet, but it’s a very interesting phone in that it was designed by someone completely lacking spatial awareness.

First things first. The Motorola Backflip is a rather appropriate name as you’re about to find out. Spec-wise it’s almost identical to the Motorola CLIQ (or Motorola DEXT MB220 as it is known outside the States).

This means typical Android device and typical specs - 3.1″ HVGA display, 528MHz CPU, 256MB RAM/512MB ROM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. The software is said to be Android 1.5 with Motoblur and lack all Google apps except Google Maps. The Android Market is included though.

AT&T have taken their time to include their own customizations - Yahoo! Search (say what?), AT&T Nav, AT&T Music and AT&T Mobile App store. Anyhow, word is that the Motorola Backflip is thinner, slightly smaller and lighter than the T-Mobile G1 (or HTC Dream).

AT&T left their mark on the Motorola Backflip

The Motorola Backflip sports a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash but, uh, there’s a problem - the placement. We mentioned the weird form factor, right? Well, sit down because your head will start spinning.

If you’ve looked at the photos you’re probably feeling something is off - how come you can see the keyboard in that one photo but not the screen? Well, it’s called “Motorola Backflip” for a reason. The keyboard is on the back on the device, while the display is on the front.

When you fold the Motorola Backflip open, things start to look normal, good even - that’s one roomy 4-row QWERTY - but putting the keyboard on the back where it’s always exposed is not exactly a good idea. And where’s the camera - on the keyboard, of course. Where else?

That’s some bad camera placement • the touchpad • the Backflip still runs Android 1.5

Oh, and that’s not all that’s strange about the Motorola Backflip - there’s a touchpad on the back of the screen, accessible when the phone is open. Apparently, it can be used for scrolling. It’s not like the phone has a 3.1″ touchscreen or anything. Weird.

One last bit of weirdness before we go - the (admittedly rumored) specs list the device as quad-band GSM/EDGE and quint-band 3G. That is 5 bands in a row - 850/900/1700/1900/2100MHz. Of course, it could just be a mistake. There’s no guarantee that the Motorola Backflip will have global 3G support (but if it does, we’d need a better name for it).

Dual-mode Motorola ZN300

Author: admin  //  Category: Motorola, News
Without a word of prior notice or any press announcements, Motorola ZN300 just went live over at Moto website. This new baby flaunts a 3 megapixel fixed focus camera and is quite strangely advertized as a cameraphone. And no, it doesn’t have any outstanding video recording capabilities that we don’t know about.

Not an overly impressive package, the lower midrange Motorola ZN300 already leaked in January but back then we didn’t know it’s a dual-mode phone.

If not anything else, Motorola ZN300 at least proves there’s nothing RAZR-ish about Motorola anymore.

At 14.7mm thickness, the ZN300 is one chubby boy. It’s got a QVGA display, Bluetooth and microSDHC card slot, a standard microUSB port and a standard 3.5mm audio jack. Doesn’t sound impressive?

Well actually, the Motorola ZN5 is the first dual-mode phone, supporting both quad-band GSM as well as TD-SCDMA for fast data transfers.

Update 04 March: Motorola have deleted the TD-SCDMA support from the Motorola ZN300 specs page so for now the device seems to simply be an ugly quad-band GSM mid-ranger.

For those of you that are not really into networking terminology we’ll put it simply by saying that TD-SCDMA is a Chinese developed standard currently being tested by the biggest Chinese telecom China Mobile as means for providing 3G network access to its subscribers.

China still doesn’t have a fully operational 3G network. The two other network carriers in China - China Unicom and China Telecom - are looking to implement the two global 3G standards WCDMA (UMTS) and CDMA-2000 respectively.

Currently, there is no word on expected pricing or availability for the Motorola ZN300.
